POEM

Saffron Light

The water doesn’t know how old you are. Dara Torres

The ochre light shimmers on the lake,

Hare Island hazy on the horizon.

A swarm of elvers swim across my feet.

A cool ripple of silver light tickles me.

I see the water move where the pinkeens

teem together among the bulrushes.

A woman waves from a green rowboat

and then she dives straight in, without fear.

I breathe in the joy of this moment, her heavy

splashes and laughter crisp and clear across the lake.

I remember that the water doesn’t know my age.

Everything is still possible in this saffron light.
